Your Needs

Different trailer types are designed to meet different needs, and that’s why you need to think about what you need out of your trailer before you start shopping. For example, if you have a tow vehicle lined up, what is its maximum weight capacity? Even if the trailer’s weight is within that capacity, bear in mind that buying a trailer that is too heavy might limit the amount you can safely haul at one time. Also, consider that certain kinds of trailers are better suited for certain jobs than others. For example, dump trailers are perfect for transporting loose materials, but you wouldn’t want to use a dump trailer to transport a horse!

Hitch Type

There are many different trailer hitch types to choose from, but two of the most popular and common hitch types are bumper pull hitches and gooseneck hitches. Bumper pull hitches are compatible with a wide range of different vehicles and are usually cheaper. Gooseneck hitches, while only compatible with tow vehicles that have truck beds, offer superior stability and control.

All-Purpose vs. Specialized Trailer

All-purpose trailers like cargo trailers and utility trailers can haul a number of different cargo types, making them extremely versatile. On the other hand, certain cargo types such as vehicles or loose debris may be difficult to transport in an all-purpose trailer due to the special circumstances they impose. In these types of situations, you’ll want a specialized trailer built to handle the challenge.
