Cargo trailers are very useful for moving from one residence to another. They make it easy to move a lot of your belongings at once while keeping those belongings safe and secure. However, there are a few dangers to avoid, such as over-encumbering the trailer or failing to secure the cargo. That is why the experts at Chattanooga Trailer & Rental have created this guide to moving house with a cargo trailer.
1. Don’t Overload Your Trailer
You may feel tempted to try to move everything in as few trips as possible. However, exceeding your cargo trailer’s weight limits is both dangerous and illegal. If you’re not sure how much your trailer can handle, the limit can be found in the owner’s manual or on a label on the trailer itself. Use a truck scale like those found at highway weigh stations to help make sure that you’re not overloading your cargo trailer.
2. Keep Cargo Balanced & Secured
The last thing you want is for your valuables to shift around during transit and become damaged. Luckily, there are several ways that you can tie your cargo down, including ratchet straps, D-rings, and rope. Securing your cargo will also help prevent trailer sway.
If too much weight is concentrated on one side of your trailer, the extra pressure can cause a tire blowout. Be sure to balance your cargo as evenly as you can from left to right. You should also have about 60% of the overall weight in the front part of your cargo trailer while keeping 40% in the back.
3. Drive With Care
Driving with a cargo trailer can be challenging, especially if the trailer is full or you need more experience. Try to avoid sudden maneuvers like rapidly switching lanes. It’s recommended that you increase your following distance and slow down to about 10 MPH below the posted speed limit. Finally, always signal your intentions to other motorists and avoid adverse conditions like high winds if possible.
